Need a newsletter redesign? Talk to Kristina

Hello all! One of the things I’m launching this year is conversations with people who hire and work with freelancers. Today we’re hearing from Kristina Volcheck, who led the redesign of this beehiiv-based newsletter so readability and accessibility improved.

Q&A with Kristina Volchek

👋 Can you introduce yourself and your role in hiring freelancers and independent contractors?

Hey there! I’m Kristina, a freelancer myself. Sometimes, when my projects need something outside my expertise - like illustrations, animations, or development - I team up with other freelancers to get the job done.

🔍 How do you find freelancers to work with?

I usually start by asking around in my communities or network. For visual work, I browse Dribbble and Behance - always easier to find the right style!

💡 What advice do you have for freelancers and independent contractors to make themselves more appealing to clients like you?

Honestly, the biggest challenge in hiring freelancers is finding them. So, make sure you’re findable! Be on every relevant freelance platform, join communities, stay active, attend online events, and share your expertise. Oh, and don’t be afraid to stand out - bold is better than invisible.

💻 What advice would you give to someone just starting out in design?

Start close to home - tap into your local scene or your network. Take on smaller projects to build momentum, and if you don’t have client work yet, create your own. Treat those personal projects like they’re for real clients and show off what you can do. Remember, design is all about visuals - clients hire with their eyes, not your CV. Make your work speak for itself.

👀 Are you looking to work with freelancers right now? Please share a little about what you’re looking for.

Not at the moment, but when I do, I’m all about working with freelancers who know how to showcase themselves. If you can sell your skills confidently, it saves me from having to convince my clients - you’ll already do that for yourself.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Start building your personal brand on day one. It’s hands-down the best investment you’ll make in your long-term career. Trust me, it pays off big time!
