Get Paid to Write About Video Games
15 publications hiring freelance writers and reporters to report and write about video games and what they mean for culture, identity, gender, and the industry

Writing about video games is the dream for many writers, but the unfortunate truth is that many publishers are not paying good rates for reporting on video games. Many have started using pay-per-view or pay-per-click pricing, which means that writers have to write and promote articles and hope they get paid a few pennies. Stay away from Valnet-owned sites, like Polygon. Inverse used to publish gaming stories, but pivoted away from gaming coverage in 2026.
I’d also suggest that its worth looking into ways to connect with editors commissioning tech pieces. A lot of technology editors will publish stories on video games, among other things. Memberships with associations like the National Association of Science Writers may come in handy too.
A few ground rules for using this list:
Don’t use AI to pitch!!! Several of these publications have anti-AI clauses in their contracts and their pitch guides.
Follow their guidelines. Read their publications before you pitch. Submissions may be closed now and reopened later.
